Lead Your Way Project

“Lead Your Way” : Empowering people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities’ participation in the open labour market through supported employment schemes and the use of digital tools.

The Lead Your Way project was developed in response to these needs. Its purpose is to promote the implementation of supported employment programmes for people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities through the development of practical digital tools that address the needs of all key stakeholders, including job seekers, job coaches, support professionals, and employers. Through these innovative resources, the project aims to strengthen the autonomy, independence, and active participation of people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities in their journey towards meaningful employment.

The Lead Your Way Project brings together a consortium of five organisations from across Europe, each contributing specialised expertise in disability support, supported employment, and digital innovation. The consortium is coordinated by Down España (Spain), which serves as Project Coordinator. A14 (Greece) acts as the Technical Partner, leading the project's digital development and innovation activities. The remaining partners are the Croatian Down Syndrome Association (Croatia), the Incotera Association (Romania), and the Malta Association of Supported Employment (Malta), each bringing extensive experience in promoting the inclusion, empowerment, and employment of persons with disabilities.

The overall objective of the Lead Your Way project is to improve the labour market participation of people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities through the promotion of supported employment methodologies and the effective use of digital tools.

Employment is widely recognised as a key driver of social inclusion for persons with disabilities. Meaningful employment provides financial independence, enhances self-esteem and community participation, and demonstrates the valuable contributions that persons with disabilities can make to society and the economy.

Despite these well-established benefits, significant disparities remain in labour market participation. Across the European Union, only 51% of persons with disabilities are employed, compared to 75% of the non-disabled population. This gap is even more pronounced for people with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities, among whom employment rates remain below 10%. Furthermore, many employment opportunities available to this group are still concentrated in segregated settings, limiting opportunities for full inclusion, career progression, and personal development. Disability is also frequently associated with low-quality and unstable employment, often characterised by limited prospects for advancement and professional growth.

In response to these challenges, supported employment has emerged as an effective methodology for facilitating access to sustainable and competitive employment within the open labour market. Supported employment provides people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities with personalised assistance tailored to their individual aspirations, skills, and support needs. This approach is based on collaborative partnerships involving employers, colleagues, service providers, families, and support professionals, while placing the individual at the centre of the process as the primary decision-maker and leader of their own employment pathway. By promoting wider adoption of supported employment practices, the project seeks to contribute to the development of more inclusive labour markets across Europe.

At the same time, the ongoing digital transformation of the workplace is creating new opportunities for persons with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities. Accessible digital information, online learning resources, flexible working arrangements, and innovative workplace accommodations have the potential to significantly enhance labour market participation. However, to fully benefit from these developments and avoid further exclusion, individuals must be equipped with the necessary digital competencies and tools to navigate an increasingly digital working environment.

To achieve this objective, the project aims to empower people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities through practical digital learning tools that support them in identifying, obtaining, and maintaining meaningful employment. It also seeks to strengthen the capacity of job coaches and support professionals by developing digital vocational training resources tailored to the needs of people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities. Furthermore, the project will support employers in creating and managing inclusive, accessible, and disability-friendly workplaces.

In addition, Lead Your Way will identify, collect, and disseminate good practices related to labour market inclusion and the use of digital tools for people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities. The project will also facilitate the transfer of knowledge and expertise among stakeholders and foster strategic cross-sector partnerships that contribute to sustainable employment inclusion and greater opportunities for people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities across Europe.

The project has a duration of 24 months.
